 Services for Traumatic Injury

Clinical Psychology Associates of North Central Florida provides services for individuals who have suffered traumatic injuries.  This may involve treatment for chronic pain, PTSD, depression, or anxiety which sometimes complicates post-injury adjustment.  Our psychotherapy staff also has experience in helping people who have suffered childhood trauma, sexual trauma or who have been victims of physical or sexual assaults.  Services for assessment of brain injuries or forensic assessment are also available.

Adjustment to Traumatic Injury

Traumatic injuries may be particularly stressful & increase an individual’s sense of vulnerability. These types of injuries may also be accompanied by anxieties, anger, or fears that result in depression, avoidance, & difficulties concentrating.

Changes of self-image, self-doubt & fears may result in withdrawal from others, feeling on edge, reduced efficiency, marital & work conflict.

Intrusive thoughts, excess physiological arousal, and disturbed sleep can interfere with performing work and other tasks requiring attention and concentration.

Sleep disturbances may complicate the picture. It may become difficult to separate the results of the injury from the psychological aftermath as injuries & stress magnify each other. Increased rates of depression and anxiety are not uncommon for traumatic injuries. Increased muscle tension from anxiety may further aggravate pain complaints and headaches.

In some cases, there is a cluster of persisting symptoms which comprise Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Children may show different reactions to traumatic events such as injuries, abuse, and traumatic events.  Relapses in bedwetting, difficulties in attachment, aggressive behavior, and other forms of acting-out may occur.

Prompt assessment & treatment assist injured individuals identify the nature of the difficulties, assist individuals in regaining a sense of mastery & reduce the impact of the injury & its psychological consequences on work, family, & quality of life.

In some cases, adjustment may be complicated by a medico-legal context.  In such cases forensic psychological assessment may be necessary.
